ALTERNATIVE

TOTAL PACKAGING CONCEPTS

We have developed a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method to optimally protect and pack motors for shipment across several climate zones in a space-saving manner.

umweltfreundliche Verpackungslösungen für den internationalen Motorenversand mit Containerschiffen

INITIAL SITUATION

REPLACE STEEL

5-cylinder engines were shipped to eastern europe in heavy steel racks. In order to make economic and commercial sense, these racks were to remain in circulation for as long as possible. In fact, however, the shrinkage of the racks (individual price: approx. 1,500 EUR) was so high that this shipping method ultimately led to high losses. In addition, the packaging method used ensured that there were always major corrosion problems, especially with the electrics.

CHALLENGES

OVERVIEW

TEMPERATURE

#1

Temperatures are usually above 25° C at the starting port and regularly below -25° C at the receiving location.

CORROSION

#2

The bulky cargo must be optimally protected against mechanical damage as well as against corrosion during transport.

SPACE

#3

Container space is valuable and must be used optimally on the way between three ports.

To meet the complex challenges of the project in all aspects, Wepa developed a completely new packaging concept. The previously used steel racks were replaced by a clever all-in-one solution tailored to the special requirements of shipping engines across several climate zones.

CONCEPT

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DISPOSABLE PACKAGING

Development phases: Sketch, computer simulation, prototype construction, BCT (box compression test), first shipment. If necessary, simulations are run in cold and/or salt chambers to exclude weak points of new concepts. This was not necessary in this case due to our experience.

EFFICIENT SOLUTION

OPTIMUM USE OF SPACE, MAXIMUM PROTECTION

The packaging solution developed for the customer optimally protects the engines to be shipped against environmental influences and makes optimum use of the valuable space inside the containers.

DEVELOPMENT

Expensive metal racks that disappeared from the cycle and thus caused high costs were initially replaced by a solution that was as single-material as possible: cardboard export packaging individually adapted to the product.

OPTIMISATION

The product is moved between three international ports until final assembly. Optimal container utilisation was taken into account along the way. The packaging was developed from the outside to the inside and back to create a balance between optimal product protection and efficient container utilisation.

CORROSION PROTECTION

Tailor-made for the product, Intercept Technology (TM) has been integrated to provide oil-free corrosion protection that defies even the harshest conditions of ocean crossing and sub-zero temperatures at the port of destination.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS

EFFECTIVE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

✔ The new packaging solution is significantly cheaper to purchase than metal racks.

✔ Despite disposable packaging, the environmental balance is positive because the materials used are recyclable.

✔ The pallet, optimised for packing size and container size, saves transport costs.

✔ The efficiency of the corrosion protection could be increased by 100 %.

✔ The new solution is also user-friendly (easy handling).
