FUTURE-PROOF-SINGLE-MATERIAL PACKAGING

TWO BECOME ONE

We redesigned the packaging of a component feeder for a pick-and-place machine and made it entirely out of cardboard. Thanks to the new single-material packaging made of block-glued cardboard, we were able to realize a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

INITIAL SITUATION

SUSTAINABLE SINGLE-MATERIAL

Our customer manufactures automatic placement machines. The current packaging of the feeders, which contains IC components, is packed in a cardboard-foam combination. We were now asked to develop a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective packaging solution for our customer. The aim was to use only one packaging material while providing the same level of protection for the goods.

CHALLENGES

OVERVIEW

Our work focused on the following changes and challenges:

RECYCLING

As the previous cardboard-foam combination had to be laboriously separated and disposed of separately, the new packaging was to consist of just one packaging material.

PROTECTION

As sensitive machine components are transported, the new single-material packaging had to guarantee the same high level of convenience and safety as the previous cardboard-foam packaging.

SHAPE

Foam is flexible and fits around every product like a tailor-made envelope. We also wanted to offer our customer this with solid corrugated cardboard packaging.

SAVINGS

In addition to saving time during packaging, the single-material solution should also reduce material costs.

PACKAGING TIME

Foam packaging has the advantage of fast packing times thanks to simplified handling during packing. Our aim was to shorten packing times with the new packaging made of pure cardboard.

FROM IDEA TO DESIGN

SUSTAINABLE SINGLE-MATERIAL PACKAGING

The aim was to develop and implement new mono packaging that meets all these requirements and is also cheaper to produce, less time-consuming to dispose of and at least as attractive in design.

IMPLEMENTATION AND RESULT

Our experienced team of packaging specialists and designers carefully analyzed the packaging requirements based on the existing cardboard foam packaging and then created a prototype with the help of CAD. This allowed us to test directly at our customer's premises whether the packaging met their wishes and requirements. The prototype was tested intensively, including whether the handling objectives were met throughout the packaging process. New adjustments were discussed and another prototype was created in a new test loop. After this multi-stage procedure and a final successful test shipment, we were finally able to go into series production.
